Plans and limits

Everything in DomoModeler belongs to an organization, and the organization's plan decides what it can do. The current numbers are always on the pricing page; this page explains what the categories mean.

What a plan controls

• Model allowances: how many models of each type the organization can create. The allowance is per type, so a plan can be generous with EventStorming models and stricter with Architecture Documents—although in practice, we generally provide equal and generous numbers of models across the board for all paid plans.
• Export and import: downloading a model or a document, and bringing an exported model back in, is a paid capability. On the Guest plan the Export buttons are visible but disabled, with a tooltip saying why.
• Real-time collaboration: several people in the same model at the same time.
• Seats: how many people can be in the organization at once. The plan's seat allowance comes with the plan and costs nothing on its own. See Seats below for what you pay for.

Export also requires edit access to the thing you are exporting, so an owner on a paid plan can still see Export disabled on a model that was shared with them view-only.

The Guest plan

Guest is the free plan for an organization of your own, and it is the way to try DomoModeler: there is no separate free trial. It is where you start if you sign up and create an organization without choosing a paid plan, and it is where an organization lands if a subscription lapses. Nothing is deleted—the organization keeps working within the Guest allowances until you pick a plan back up.

You do not need a plan of any kind to join someone else's organization. Accepting an invitation does not create an organization for you; you simply become a member of theirs, and while you are working there you get everything their plan allows. That is why an invited colleague, client, or consultant costs them a seat and nothing else.

What a Guest organization gets:

• Five models of every type—EventStorming, Context Maps, Domain Models, Architecture, Business Model Canvas, Mind Maps, Impact Maps, Glossaries, Architecture Documents, and ADR logs.
• One organization. Creating additional organizations is a paid capability.
• No export or import, no real-time collaboration, and no CodeUp!™.

The limits apply to the organization, not to you. Someone whose own organization is on Guest still exports, collaborates and uses every paid capability inside a paid organization they belong to, because what you can do is decided by the organization the model lives in.

Seats

Your plan grants a seat allowance; you pay for the seats you actually fill. On Pro, for example, the allowance is 25, and an organization using 4 of them pays for 4. The headroom costs nothing until someone occupies it.

Seats are yours for the billing term, and they are freely reassignable.

• Adding someone takes the next seat and is charged for the current period. A seat added on the last day of a month costs that whole month; there is no part-month rate. On an annual plan it costs the annual plan's per-month rate for each month left in your term, counting the current one. (See Billing months for what counts as a month.)
• Removing someone frees their seat for anyone else. It does not reduce or refund the current period, because that seat is already paid for through the end of the term.
• Replacing someone costs nothing. Because a freed seat stays yours, whoever fills it next is covered by what you already paid. A team where ten people cycle through five seats over a year pays for five seats.
• Growing costs. Adding a person while every paid seat is occupied is a new seat, charged as above.
• Shrinking takes effect at renewal. If you end the term using fewer seats than you paid for, your next term bills the lower number. You are never carried past a term you did not need.

Inviting someone reserves their seat straight away, before they accept, so the invitation cannot be outbid by someone else's. Withdrawing an unaccepted invitation frees it again.

Once every seat in your plan's allowance is filled, inviting one more asks you to move up a plan rather than adding a seat, because the allowance is a property of the plan.

Billing months

A billing month is 30 days, counted from the start of your current term. On an annual plan, months 1 through 11 are 30 days each, and month 12 runs to the end of the term. On a monthly plan, the month is simply your billing period. Everything below that talks about "the current month" or "whole months left" uses this definition, not the calendar month.

Changing plans

Upgrading takes effect immediately. You are credited for the time left on your current plan and charged for the new plan over the same time, so you pay only the difference, at once. The review screen shows the credit, the charge and the difference before you confirm. For example, for one seat on an annual plan with 2.5 months used, moving from a $7-a-month plan to a $12-a-month plan credits 9.5 months at $7 ($66.50), charges 9.5 months at $12 ($114), and bills the $47.50 difference.

Downgrading takes effect at the end of your current month. You keep the plan you paid for until then.

• On a monthly plan, your next bill is at the new plan's price. Nothing is refunded.
• On an annual plan, we refund the price difference between the two plans for each whole month left in your term after the change. For example, downgrading one seat from $12 a month to $7 a month with 4.5 months used: the higher plan continues to the end of month 5, then 7 months × $5 = $35 is refunded.

Before you confirm, the review screen shows when the downgrade takes effect, what will be refunded, and anything your organization uses beyond the smaller plan's allowances. A pending downgrade can be withdrawn until it takes effect.

Switching from annual to monthly is treated as canceling the annual plan (see below), and monthly billing begins when the annual plan ends. Switching from monthly to annual is an upgrade and takes effect immediately.

Canceling and refunds

You can cancel at any time from Account → Billing. What happens depends on your plan and how long you have been in the current term:

Part of a month is never refunded, and the current month always counts as used. For example, for one seat on an annual plan that costs $84 a year ($9 a month on the monthly plan), canceling after 1 month and 1 week keeps your access until the end of month 2, and refunds $84 − 2 × $9 = $66. Each month you used is charged at the monthly price because the annual discount is for staying the whole year. Late in the term, those months can add up to everything you paid; then nothing is refunded, and you keep paid access to the end of the term instead of the end of the month.

Example: canceling 7.5 months in. Month 8 is under way, so it counts as used, and your access continues until the end of month 8. For one seat:

Does the month I cancel in count as used? Yes. It counts as a full month, even if you cancel partway through it, and you keep access until it ends.

Are the months after that refunded? Yes: whatever remains of what you paid once the months you used are counted at the monthly price.

So are the months I used charged at the monthly price? In effect, yes, but never as a new charge. The difference is taken out of the refund, and a refund never goes below zero, so you never owe more than you paid.

How does that work out? It is the same as refunding the unused months at the annual rate, less the extra the used months would have cost on the monthly plan. In the example above, months 9 to 12 at the annual rate are 4 × $7 = $28; the used months would have cost 8 × ($9 − $7) = $16 more on the monthly plan; $28 − $16 = $12. On the $144 plan: 4 × $12 = $48, less 8 × ($16 − $12) = $32, leaves $16.

A pending cancellation can be undone until it takes effect. Refunds go back to the card you paid with and may take several business days to appear. Consumer-protection law in some countries gives you additional rights to withdraw from a purchase; nothing here limits them.

If a purchase is declined

A purchase can be declined when it appears to repeat an earlier purchase that was refunded or charged back: for example, one made with the same email address, account, or payment card. If that happens, you are told which of these matched and when the earlier purchase was made, any payment taken is refunded in full, and Dispute this decision lets you explain. We review every dispute and reply by email.

Who manages the plan

The organization's owner manages billing. Members in the user menu shows the seats in use, and Account shows the current plan.

If billing lapses

A subscription that goes unpaid does not delete anything. The organization goes read-only: everyone can still open and read every model, and the editors show the view-only pill, but nothing can be changed until the subscription is settled. Owners see a notice with the number of days remaining before that happens. Beyond that, the organization continues on Guest rather than being shut off.

Deleting an account or organization

Deleting is deliberate and irreversible. It removes the organization's models along with it, so export anything you want to keep first.

Deleting an organization also ends its subscription immediately. On an annual plan after the first 30 days, the refund is calculated as for a cancellation, with the current month counted as used. Otherwise nothing is refunded.
